The Install Extension and Run VS Code Command agent tools, the Create New Workspace tool and the /new slash command are no longer available in Local agent sessions. Remove #installExtension and #runCommand references from custom agents and prompt files.
VS Code 1.144 adds an Agent Host that keeps agent sessions running locally or remotely, with continuity across VS Code, Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and github.com. Agents use the Copilot harness by default; the Claude Code or Codex harnesses can be used instead with a Copilot subscription.
Stable 1.142 (released Oct 14, 2026) adds preview shared canvases beside chat, lets you move a chat to another folder or Git worktree without losing history, expands the Markdown editor, and progressively makes the Copilot harness the default for new sessions.
